Spiritual Cleansings
Spiritual Cleansings have a long tradition within the African based religions of Santeria, Vodou, Candomble and Umbanda/Quimbanda, but are often overlooked and under-rated by many spiritual practitioners in the West - be it Wiccas, Ceremonial Magicians or Chaos Magicians! Any form of spiritual cleansing can be referred as an Exorcism, a word that unfortunately bears a nasty after-taste due to badly researched Hollywood movies, cheap novels and the sensationalist press. This seems to be one of the many reasons why spiritual cleansings are underrated and sometimes laughed at, sometimes even by people within the metaphysical community!
But don't be fooled! The effects of spiritual cleansings and their necessity are much greater then what many people think! I have personally met many spiritual mediums (including some of the so called "top mediums of our time" who suffer from excessive health issues but still don't see a need to resort to spiritual cleansings in their work and practice - it is in my opinion and experiences with many mediums very questionable if the neglect for cleansing and psychic protection is either a lack of training and understanding or simple ignorance - or possibly a combination of both!
Not only the area in which we perform our spiritual work needs to be cleansed, but also our homes and of course ourselves - our 'aura' for lack of a better term. It is one thing to create 'sacred space' by cleansing and smudging, but yet another to clean ourselves after a ceremony, after spiritual work or simply after making contact with anything and everything that could create a spiritual imbalance and bring about spiritual contamination - cemeteries, spiritual gatherings, hospitals and funerals homes to mention but a few!
Early signs of such 'contaminations' are restlessness, depression, insomnia, nightmares and paranoia to mention a few.
If neglected, spiritual contamination can result in mental and physical health issues - from depression and insomnia to burning sensations and pain, excema, serious weight loss and even paralysis. Today's New Age and Alternative Healing Community places much emphasis on 'Detox', 'Cleansing Therapy', Body & Colon-Flushes and all other kinds of physical and medical/complimentary cleansings to promote better health and well-being. But strangely enough, nobody seems to see the need for spiritual cleansings!
Serious spiritual cleansing is not something that an unexperienced person should do - no matter how much one has heard or read about 'how its done'. The Bible, Book of Acts chapter 19, verses 13-20 tells a story of how the seven sons of a certain Jewish chief priest named Sceva attempted to drive out evil spirits by saying: "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." Verse 15 of this story tells us: "But [one] evil spirit retorted, Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?"
A spiritual cleansing is rarely so dramatical, but what this story shows us is that it is one thing to how ABOUT the process of spiritual cleansing and yet another to have the needed knowledge and experiences to perform such acts.
Some simple steps to help oneself with spiritual cleansing can be found in Spiritual Cleansing: A Handbook of Psychic Protection by Draja Mickaharic (picture above). The book description of Mr Mickaharic's work states: This book is a manual of psychic first aid, written to help you clean your spiritual atmosphere and to protect yourself in your environment. Everyone, at some time or another, has met an individual who seems to be surrounded with negativity, or has visited a place that seems imbued with "bad vibrations." Removing these negative vibrations is what spiritual cleansing is all about.
